Introduction

I am a married mother of three, Army combat veteran, community, child, and education advocate, author, and substitute teacher who is working to finish her elementary education certification with a middle school endorsement through the URI MAT/TCP Program. I am a graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and a minor of Political Science. I spent many years serving as a social work case manager before transitioning into the education arena as an English instructor, emergency substitute teacher in Arizona, and teaching life skills to children and adults at various ages and stages in life. The teaching bug came from the realization that education is the cure for many socioeconomic challenges facing many of the clients I've had the privilege of working for and with. I also believe that my social work and political background gives me a strong foundation to create positive change through strong coalition building and communicative ability. As my mother has always said, "Lara was born talking."
